Bowen Therapy is an umbrella term that includes several versions (BowTech, NST, and others) of the work of the late Tom Ambrose Bowen (1916-1982) of Australia.  A brilliant man,  Mr. Bowen throughout his lifetime and even afterwards, impacted humanity in a huge and positive way.  His unique system of therapy continues to revolutionize healthcare worldwide.

Brenda offers the Bowen Technique (BowTech) and Neuro-Structural Integration Technique (NST) versions.  Both are therapeutic systems developed to facilitate whole body healing.  And they are gaining in popularity because of their incredible effectiveness.  Their purpose is to remove pain and other physiological dysfunction by restoring the structural integrity of the body.

How is Bowen Therapy done?

BowTech and NST procedures consist of a series of skin-rolling movements on specific points on the body (usually on acupoints).  The movements are gentle and can be done through clothing.  Frequent and important pauses occur between sets of moves.  This gives the body time to benefit from each and to integrate them via the nervous system.

Bowen therapy stimulates the healing process by activating the body’s natural ability to heal itself.  Almost all clients report a sense of relaxation after a treatment or series of treatments.  And many say they feel an ongoing organized healing response,  An unraveling of neuromuscular compensations is the result. The nervous system “resets” itself much like you sometimes need to reboot a computer. The relief is profound and lasting, affecting the musculoskeletal, digestive, respiratory, glandular, circulatory, and energetic systems.

In Bowen Therapy, fascia is key.

Bowen Therapy is based on a particular understanding by Mr. Bowen.  That is, that the underlying source of many musculoskeletal, neurological, neuromuscular and other health problems is found in the fascia. Fascia is a specific type of connective tissue. It forms a three-dimensional web, surrounding every tissue in the body. Fascia is the body’s organizer.  It embraces all nerves, bones, arteries, veins and muscles. So, its dysfunction can affect every structure, muscle, nerve, and organ in the body. Recent studies show fascia to be the largest sensory organ in the body. When stimulated with Bowen Therapy “moves,” fascia is softened and rehydrated, allowing muscles to relax.  Each move sets in motion vibrations that continue for five to ten days.  In turn, this opens up an energy flow that brings the body back into balance.

So, who is Bowen Therapy for?

It’s for anyone who has acute (recent) or chronic (ongoing) pain.  Specifically, clients experience great results for migraine headaches, neck and back pain, sciatica, scoliosis, carpal tunnel syndrome, frozen shoulder, sports injuries, fibromyalgia, arthritis, and many more varied conditions.  Even infertility issues are addressed with Bowen Therapy, as well as challenges with birth and delivery.

Of course, the acute sprained ankle or pulled hamstring is only going to need a session or two to set in motion the proper healing response.  But a chronic condition like fibromyalgia, arthritis, or scoliosis is going to take many more sessions in order to unwind and train the body to keep the new healing response.  After all, it’s had years of holding its old, familiar patterns.

Then, there are situations like repetitive strain. This often results in conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome or tennis elbow.  These can certainly be resolved.  However, it may require temporarily giving up the very activity that caused this to happen in the first place.  Or perhaps you can do the activity in a different way or with another hand, for example.

Why do people love Bowen Therapy?

Most people love Bowen Therapy for its profound effectiveness. And this, even in spite of very little having to be done to accomplish such great and lasting results.  With this therapy, the phrase “no pain, no gain” does not apply.  Tom Bowen was very emphatic about “less is more” with his work.  It certainly does not require deep, invasive manipulations of muscles or fascia. Instead, Bowen Therapy uses very light pressure, directly targeted to your problem areas.

What is the Bowen experience like?

Many people fall asleep during their Bowen Therapy experience.  It takes you into a very relaxed brainwave state,  down-regulating the autonomic nervous system (ANS).  Another aspect people love about this technique is not having to disrobe.  It is done through light-weight, loose-fitting clothing, either worn to the session or brought with you.
